Posterior ankle impingement: what is it & how to diagnose it?

Writer: Luke NelsonLuke Nelson

🦶Posterior ankle impingement: what is it & how to diagnose it?

Posterior ankle impingement is an important differential for posterior ankle pain, that we see frequently misdiagnosed as Achilles tendinopathy.

🦶This condition involves the compression of structures in the back of the ankle and can be caused by joint, bone or soft tissue issues.

🤕 Symptoms tend to be aggravated by end-range plantarflexion movements such as raising up on tiptoes or kicking a ball.

🔎 The Posterior impingement test will also be positive for pain in the back of the ankle.
