Faded feedback for running gait retraining

Writer: Luke NelsonLuke Nelson

When learning a new skill, or changing your running gait, you will need more guidance at first, but then this feedback is gradually reduced as you learn. This process is called faded feedback.

We have used the following faded feedback protocol with good success for our runners when implementing changes to their running gait:

  • Week 1: every 500m think about the prescribed changes (i.e. turning on a metronome, focus on posture, arm swing, listening to your footsteps etc.)

  • Week 2: every 1km check prescribed changes

  • Week 3: every 1km check prescribed changes but only on alternate runs

  • Week 4 onwards: only check as required
